University of Cambridge Scholarship 2024 and How to Apply


Since the year 2000, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship has empowered the lives of numerous students from all around the world.  The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was funded by a staggering $210 million donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which to date stands as one of the most impressive single donations to a UK university. 


Who Can Apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship? 

Read the following to be sure you are part of those who can apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship: 

  1. Applicants must be citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom.
  2. Applicants for this scholarship must apply to pursue any of these courses at the University of Cambridge: 
  • PhD (full-time or part-time)
  • MLitt (full-time)
  • One-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions – see below 

Here are some courses Gates Cambridge does not consider: 

  • Any Undergraduate degree, such as a BA (undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
  • Business Doctorate (BusD)
  • Master of Business (MBA)
  • Master of Finance (MFin)
  • MASt courses 
  • PGCE 
  • MBBChir Clinical Studies 
  • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time, Home students only)=
  • Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
  • Part-time degrees other than the PhD 
  • Non-degree courses

The application date for U.S. citizens starts on Monday 4 September 2023 and ends on Wednesday 11 October 2023 (Noon time in local US time zone). 


As for other eligible applicants from other countries, the application date starts on Monday 4 September 2023, and ends on Tuesday 5 December 2023, or Thursday  4 January 2024 depending on the course applied for.

Timeline for Gates Cambridge Scholarship 

Students from the United States and other countries of the world aside from the United Kingdom can apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.  However,  applicants who are citizens of the United States and permanent residents tend to have a different timeline compared to those from other countries.

Gate Cambridge Scholarship Coverage 

Here is a detailed breakdown of the benefits that the Gates Cambridge Scholarship offers eligible students: 

  1. The University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate
  2. A maintenance allowance for a single student (£20,000 for 12 months at the 2023-24 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) – for PhD scholars, the award is for up to 4 years
  3. One economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
  4. Inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge

In addition… 

  1. Academic development funding – from up to £500 to up to £2,000, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
  2. Family allowance – up to £10,944 for one child and up to £15,612 for two or more children (2022-23 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.
  3. Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).
  4. Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time. 
  5. Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties facing the scholar.

Criteria to be eligible for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 

To be eligible for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship every applicant must fulfill the following criteria/requirements: 

  1. Candidates/Applicants must be able to read, write, and understand the English Language.  
  2. Citizens and permanent residents of the United States and citizens from all other countries of the world apart from the United Kingdom are eligible to apply. 
  3. Candidates/Applicants must showcase academic excellence and the desire to contribute to the betterment of society.  
  4. Candidates/Applicants should make a strong case to pursue a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge.

  2. Next, provide the relevant information required of you in the application form.  
  3. You may be asked to submit the following documents: 
  • Gates Cambridge Statement: This is a personal statement required as part of the application process for the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship.  You will be asked to provide no more than 500 words (approximately 3,000 characters) explaining why you are applying for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and how you meet the requirements including what you hope to achieve and why you deserve the scholarship. 

A personalized Curriculum Vitae (CV)/Resume.  

  • Research Proposal (For PhD applicants only. It is not included for other studies). 
  • Two academic references for admission.

How Many Fully Funded Gate Cambridge Scholarships Are Given Out Each Year? 

Every year,  about 80 fully funded Gate Cambridge Scholarships are given out each year to individuals with outstanding abilities from different geographical locations to pursue postgraduate degrees is the University of Cambridge. Around two-thirds of these opportunities are offered to PhD students with the United States having 25 and 55 to students from other countries of the world. 

Is It Hard to Get Gate Cambridge Scholarship? 

To some extent, it is hard to get a Cambridge Scholarship because of its highly competitive nature. For instance, about 500 students from the United States apply for the scholarship every year, but only one-fourth of the students are offered a follow-up.  That said,  we advise all applicants to consider multiple scholarship opportunities as the Cambridge Scholarship may not always be guaranteed.
