Job Responsibilities

As a phlebotomy technician, my typical daily responsibilities involve collecting blood specimens from patients of all ages via venipuncture or skin puncture methods. Additional duties may include:

  • Verifying patient identities and obtaining paperwork or consent as required
  • Maintaining supplies and ensuring laboratory equipment is clean, calibrated, and in good working order
  • Transporting specimens to the lab and entering relevant information into computer systems
  • Communicating with nurses, doctors, and lab staff regarding patient schedules, test requests, or results
  • Performing EKGs, specimen collections for drug or alcohol screenings, or other basic laboratory procedures
  • Providing quality customer service, answering questions, and making patients feel at ease

  • Assisting with additional clinical duties as assigned, including measurements or specimen processing

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required, associate degree or certification in phlebotomy or medical assisting preferred
  • 6 months to 1 year prior relevant work experience collecting specimens in a medical setting
  • Valid phlebotomy certification through organizations like NHA or ASCP
  • Current BLS certification and ability to obtain ACLS within the probationary period
  • Expert knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology related to blood collection
