EPFL Excellence Fellowships: Supporting Top International Students


The EPFL Excellence Fellowships are a prestigious award offered by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland to attract and support exceptional international master’s and PhD students.


Application & Eligibility:

Applications are accepted once a year in mid-October. Applicants must hold an excellent academic record and have gained admission to a master’s or doctoral program at EPFL for the following fall intake. Fellowships support students from all nationalities except Switzerland.

Funding & Benefits:

Fellowships cover tuition fees and provide a living allowance of CHF 23,500-28,000 per year depending on the degree level. For doctoral candidates, funding is available for up to 4 years. Additional benefits include academic guidance, mentoring, and integration support. No teaching duties are required.

Selection Criteria:

Candidates are evaluated based on prior academic excellence, motivating cover letters, reference letters, research/study proposals, and potential to excel at EPFL. Extracurricular accomplishments adding value to the EPFL community are also considered. Interviews may be requested for final evaluations.

The application deadlines for the EPFL Excellence Fellowships are:

  • Master’s programs (All majors): October 15th every year. This deadline is for admission to a Master’s program starting the following fall semester (September).
  • Doctoral programs:

Biology and Medicine related majors – October 15th every year for admission starting the following fall.

Engineering majors – January 15th every year for admission starting the following fall.

Math, Computer Science, and Physics-related majors – January 15th every year for admission starting the following fall.

  • PhD Sandwich Fellowships: Rolling application deadlines throughout the year based on the availability of supervisors. This fellowship is for continuing PhD students admitted to EPFL who wish to conduct a research stay abroad for 6-12 months.
  • Specific deadlines may apply for certain partnerships and pilot programs. These are announced on the fellowship website.

All applications including recommendation letters must be submitted by 23:59 CET on the deadline date. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Results are typically communicated by mid-March for October deadlines and the end of May for January deadlines.
